In a bi-partisan effort, former President George H. W. Bush and former President Bill Clinton, who co-chair the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, will address the National Association of Realtors' (NAR) National Conference & Expo in New Orleans November 11, according to the Inman News Blog. RISMedia reports the details:
The two former presidents, who worked together on relief efforts after the 2004 South Asian tsunami and again after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, are expected to discuss recovery from Hurricane Katrina and the work of their fund. Their rare joint appearance is believed to be the first time they have appeared together at a convention and the first time that any association has hosted two former presidents.
Last week, Presidents Bush and Clinton announced several grants totaling $9.7 million and covering all three states impacted by Hurricane Katrina – Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The grants include funds to help build new homes; provide mental health and health care services; rebuild water, sewer and gas utilities; build shoreline improvement projects; provide community and child development services; and provide financial counseling and aid in economic recovery. On their initial visit to New Orleans earlier this year, Presidents Bush and Clinton announced the allocation of $30 million to Gulf-region higher education institutions devastated by Hurricane Katrina; $20 million for local faith-based organizations; and $40 million divided between Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for their recovery and relief funds.
Realtors have joined the United Way, Red Cross and other charities to help the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, to a total sum of nearly $18 million. The NAR convention will add nearly $40 million in convention revenues and nearly 30 thousand visitors, which should be of great assistance to funding New Orleans' rebuilding effort.
