Real estate as a career is a viable alternative to traditional careers, in that it gives you a certain level of freedom. That said, here are a few things I believe you should see in yourself before embarking on a career in real estate.
1. Discipline.
Real estate agents are generally independent contractors, and therefore become entrepreneurs in a sense. While you may receive support and training (depending on the company you work for), you will in essence be in charge of your success. With over a million Realtors* nationally, it will take quite a bit of creativity, and discipline to really survive in the real estate business, especially during downturns (which happen in cycles).
2. Social and Networking Ability.
The number one way to be successful in sales (in any industry-not just real estate), will be your ability to network and talk to people. People need help, and advice when looking to purchase real estate, and the thing that will help you stand out above others will be two things. First, their ability to trust you. And, second your demonstration of knowledge. People generally work with those they are familiar with, or those that come highly recommended. Being in front of others, making conversation, and otherwise promoting yourself is a great way to generate business.
3. Patience and Follow-up.
Many times, I find clients coming to me after working with one of my colleagues. The number one complaint I hear is that their agent took days to call back, or was hard to get in touch with. Today's society affords us with a multitude of communication options. E-mail, text messages, telephones, instant messages, all give you an opportunity to talk to, and update clients. Buying real estate can be stressful, even for a seasoned buyer. An easy way to be of service is to be in touch.
*Realtors are members of the National Association of Realtors. You do not have to be a Realtor to be a real estate agent, so this number only includes real estate agents or brokers who are members. An exact figure can be found here.

In addition, a real estate agent must realize that they are an independent business person who must manage all aspects of their business; including marketing, prospecting, administrating and selling.
